I just spent several minutes helping an elderly lady pick out some condoms and lubricant. Her husband had had an affair and she had just gotten off the phone with the AIDS hotline, had herself tested at the doctors, and needed help in finding the right tools to protect herself in the event they are able to reconcile and end up getting frisky.

Is it any wonder she felt so tentative and awkward as we talked?
