Howard Dean On the Bush Doctrine

Presidential candidate Howard Dean gave a talk at Harvard last night. He asked an interesting question. Next year, how will we feel when China invades Taiwan because they think they have weapons of mass destruction? Has the new Bush Doctrine, pre-emptive wars, unleashed a philosophy of world power that we may not be so comfortable with?

Due to her inability to answer any of his questions without asking the director to cut while she had a glass of water bought to her/had her make up touched up/had her boobs pushed further apart the interview took fricken ages. So he pissed in the jacuzzi. The end.

Searching for the Middle

Why? Because I think that fundamentalism is the real enemy of progress, and that includes both fundamentalist take-no-prisoners conservatives as well as fundamentalist America-is-a-sink-of-corruption lefties [~] both at home and abroad. I'm tired of Christian fundamentalists, who apparently think America should be ruled via some lunatic interpretation of the book of Leviticus, and I'm tired of Islamic fundamentalists, who think it's a sin for women to drive cars. Likewise, I'm tired of tax-cut fundamentalists who want to ruin the American economy via deficits as far the eye can see, and I'm tired of anti-globalization fundamentalists who think McDonald's is the root of all evil.

Given the current war in Iraq I thought it prudent to dig out the piece and see if it had anything to offer. My perpsectives have grown quite a bit in the intervening years. I'm going to spend the next few hours/days editing, linking, and formatting the piece.

I don't know whether this was an intentional cut away because the culture minister is about to say something that is embarrassing to the United States or if it was just time for the anchor Aaron Brown to get more face time. Either way it was a very stupid move on CNN's part. If prinicipals involved in a war are giving live speeches to the world I would think a news organization would have an obligation to carry it.

The French, Russia, Germany, & War Crimes

Considering that these countries have done everything possible for several years to stop Saddam Hussein from being tried by the international war crimes courts I have to wonder why it is that Bush even went to the security council in the first place, or rather, how come he did not make this very clear. It seems as if he could have forced the international war crime court issue and gotten lots of play or even an entrance to a widely supported war if he had done so.

From John Aravosis' The List

ARKANSAS SCHOOL PERSECUTES GAY STUDENT
Ok, this is one of those blood-boiling stories. The ACLU reports that a
junior high school in Jacksonville, Arkansas is persecuting a 14-year-
old kid because he's gay. According to the ACLU, among the youth's
punishments for being a homo? "School officials preached their
religious views on homosexuality and forced him to read aloud from the
Bible in clear violation of the establishment clause of the First
Amendment. This was done as punishment after McLaughlin, who is himself
a Christian, disagreed with a teacher for calling him 'abnormal' and
'unnatural.'"

This kid needs to sue their bigoted asses off. In the meantime, you can
help by contacting the superintendent and school board on behalf of this
young man. Be sure to keep your emails angry yet polite. You can be
sure that the bigots will be contacting the school in droves - let's let
their venom speak for itself.

Abortion: Back in the Spotlight

To the Editor:

"Senate G.O.P. Holds Firm as Vote on Abortion Nears" (news article, March 13) notes that as part of the debate over so-called partial-birth abortion, the Senate voted on a nonbinding resolution reaffirming that Roe v. Wade is the law of the land and that it should not be overturned. The resolution was endorsed in a 52-to-46 vote.

Not discussed was one of the most interesting nuances of the larger abortion debate going on in Congress. If only the women in the Senate had voted, the resolution would have passed 13 to 1. Ninety-three percent of the women in the Senate voted to uphold the law of the land, including the support of four Republicans.

The message from this debate is simple: when women hold office, overwhelmingly choice is protected. This is a message that pro-choice voters should keep in mind as we gear up for the next election.

33rd Anniversary of the Death of Jan Palach

Saturday was the 33rd anniversary of the tragic death of the twenty-year-old
Prague student, Jan Palach. On the 19th January 1969, Jan Palach died in a
Prague hospital from burns sustained when he had set himself alight on
Wenceslas Square three days earlier.

It was a silent and desperate protest against the Soviet occupation of
Czechoslovakia, that had begun five months before, and against the
Czechoslovak
authorities' acceptance of the occupation. "In history there are times when
action has to be taken," Jan Palach said from his deathbed. He hoped that
his
death would stir Czechs into refusing to accept the grim reality of what the
communists cynically called "normalisation", but tragically normalisation
was
to stay for another twenty years. His sacrifice has remained etched in
memory

both in the Czech Republic and abroad, and to mark the anniversary a small
service of remembrance was held in Jan Palach's home town of Vsetaty, a few
kilometres north-east of Prague.

Restoring Integrity & Buying Controversy

puma1.jpg
puma2.jpg
It has been brought to our attention that several unauthorized, sexually suggestive advertisements portraying the PUMA brand have been released over the Internet. We are appalled that images like these would be created and distributed under the PUMA name. As a brand, we seek to take a unique perspective toward our advertising in an effort to challenge the boundaries of our industry; however we would never consider using these tactics. We are in the process of researching the circumstances and reserve any legal steps available.

Further parody. [full size]

In February it was revealed that Jenna Jameson will soon become a public figure on behalf of Pony. Jenna Jameson is one of the stars of the Vivid adult entertainment juggernaut. In the next few days she will begin appearing on a line of condoms with the Vivid name. She also recently signed a new deal with Vivid in which will have more control over her career by producing in addition to her on screen performances. By making these moves into mainstream media Jenna seems on her way to becoming the primary figure behind mainstreaming porn. In April her reality television show Jenna Jameson's Stripper Ball will premiere on the Playboy Channel. By working with media properties such as Vanity Fair, Dennis Rodman, and Inside Edition her public profile and subsequent ability to sell products will be enhanced.

Notice the spunk

Given the increasing presence of the adult entertainment industry in mainstream culture it would not be surprising to see Puma advertising their wares in such a fashion. The parody of a fashion ad currently causing all the stress among Puma folks such as Peter Kim, who responded to Felix Salmon's query with the above quote expressing the appalled Puma "official" response to the overt sexual concourse presented in the fake ad.

What Is the War Powers Act?

The suit, brought by several members of Congress and a few "active-duty" members of our armed forces, sought an order from the courts preventing the White House and Pentagon from starting a war with Iraq. The plaintiffs argued that Congress never legitimately gave the President the authority to conduct a war and, alternatively, that the Executive and Legislative branches are inappropriately in cahoots with each other that authority, requiring the Judicial branch to set things right.

Matthew Bailey-Dick, 30, from Waterloo ON, was denied entry into the USA early on March 7, 2003, after U.S. immigration officials at Port Huron MI found literature from Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) in the trunk of
his rental car. The immigration officers claimed that the CPT newsletters,
printed in Chicago IL, were "anti-American." They also raised concerns
about a sticker on Bailey-Dick's guitar case that read, "Question authority."

Bailey-Dick is currently studying at Associated Mennonite Biblical
Seminaries in Goshen, IN. He had been in Waterloo, ON, speaking at the
church he had pastored for the previous two years--Waterloo Kitchener
United
Mennonite Church--about his participation in the recent CPT delegation
to
Iraq.

Bailey-Dick was carrying a J-1 student visa, valid until the end of
August
2003. U.S. immigration officers confiscated the visa, insisting that he needed a new type of visa document. They then finger-printed and
photographed him. Later that day, an immigration supervisor told
Bailey-Dick
that his student visa was valid, but that he was still denied entry into
the
USA. The supervisor said that Bailey-Dick needed to go to Detroit for an interview with an even higher-echelon U.S. immigration official.

When he arrived at the Detroit border crossing on March 8, Bailey-Dick
was
questioned for an hour by FBI agent Tom Morisi and immigration officer
John
Owen about the work of Christian Peacemaker Teams and the CPT delegation
to
Iraq. They then informed him that his student visa would be reissued.

At the end of the questioning, Owen cautioned Bailey-Dick, "Don't bring
any
of that literature across the border any more. It's one thing for an
American citizen to distribute such literature. It's quite a different
thing
for a foreign national to come into the USA and promote such ideas."

Moving the Dead for Cheap Political Gain

Frustrated by France's refusal to support a war with Iraq, U.S. Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite proposes bringing the remains of American veterans buried in France back to the United States.

If the country that U.S. troops helped liberate during World War II won't support American military plans, then Brown-Waite proposes bringing the remains of those troops home for the families that request it.

"France has consistently turned its back on the United States," said Brown-Waite, R- Brooksville. "They forget if it weren't for America, they would be speaking German today."

More than 74,000 U.S. servicemen and women from World War I and World War II are buried in American cemeteries in France and Belgium, according to the American Battle Monuments Commission.

If I had someone buried over there, I don't as all my family in WWII came home afterwards, I would be royally offended by this suggestion. As it is, I am royally offended by this suggestion.

The Bush press conference to me was like a mini-Alamo for American journalism, a final announcement that the press no longer performs anything akin to a real function. Particularly revolting was the spectacle of the cream of the national press corps submitting politely to the indignity of obviously pre-approved questions, with Bush not even bothering to conceal that the affair was scripted.

Doctors were shocked to find a markedly swollen penis as the cause which required immediate surgery to remove a large blood clot. The question — how did it happen?

He was reluctant to explain but finally admitted he had been masturbating vigorously when he heard a sudden snap followed by intense pain and swelling.

The diagnosis? A fractured penis, the 67th case to be reported in world literature.

Stone Baby

Lithopaedions are calcified fetuses. The earliest recorded dated back to 1582 when a 28-year old fetus was found in French woman.

In 1995, the Lancet medical journal reported that a 92-year-old woman had a lithopaedion inside her body. In 1999, the Madigan Military Hospital in Washington D.C. said a 67-year-old woman had been found to have carried a calcified fetus for 39 years.

Three years ago a 76-year-old woman was found to have carried a 20-gram (0.7 ounce) and 12-centimeter-long lithopaedion for 49 years.

In an interesting example of false information being passed around as truth Google has 19 results which all claim that there are a total of four recorded lithopaedions in history. From what I see there are five. There are five recorded lithopaedions in history.

I'm willing to bet there is someone who studies lithopaedions. This person could no doubt tell stories of stone babies in literature, mythology, medical lore. But I don't know anything except there are five on the net. Who studies lithopaedions?

I Am Very Distrustful of this Sentence

oral contraceptive users are more likely to have more sexual partners than non-pill users.

I know an enormous number of married women who use the pill and only have their husbands as partners. I'd like to see studies which support this claim.

Moron Alert, No. 47

[Maria asks Colin Powell] Even though there's not much of a problem with racism and religious tolerance in my school, there's definitely one when it comes to homophobia. Do you think racism, religious discrimination and discrimination against homosexuals should be treated equally?

I think any form of discrimination has to be looked at. As you know, the military has the policy, "Don't ask, don't tell," so that somebody who is openly homosexual does not serve. I'm an advocate of that policy, I helped put that policy in place and I'm accused, therefore, of supporting homophobia.

But I think it's a different matter with respect to the military because you're essentially told who you're going to live with, who you're going to sleep next to, and it's a different set of circumstances in a military environment.

Out of a military environment, in a school, I think any act that suggests someone should be discriminated against or in some way stigmatized because of their racial background, ethnic background or sexual preference is not appropriate.

Here in the State Department, sexual preference makes no difference; we have gay ambassadors and employees throughout the Department. I don't know who they are and it's none of my business, as long as they do their jobs.

And that doesn't apply to gay folks because they might be sleeping next to someone? Has this guy left his brain at the security council? Calling all delegates, has anyone mistakenly picked up the Secretary of States brain? Please bring it to the front desk and no questions will be asked.

Cleaning Up After the Brat

It's unfortunately like babysitting someone else's horribly spoiled brat. I cannot discipline and direct them as I see fit and I can only wait until they leave my care. They cannot leave soon enough, before they break something else of value. Put away anything precious and any sharp objects as best as you can in the mean time.

Stone Baby

Lithopaedions are calcified fetuses. The earliest recorded dated back to 1582 when a 28-year old fetus was found in French woman.

In 1995, the Lancet medical journal reported that a 92-year-old woman had a lithopaedion inside her body. In 1999, the Madigan Military Hospital in Washington D.C. said a 67-year-old woman had been found to have carried a calcified fetus for 39 years.

i said, ok, say that the reason that gas prices are way up right now is because Iraq is a much more powerful nation than they appear. say that just like they control oil prices in california, they control the tea prices in china, and they are hugely responsible for the activities surrounding the attacks of 9/11 just like the saudis.

i could hear him writing because he talked while he wrote.

... just like the saudis. ok good, now what? oh wait. we cant say anything about the saudis.

why not? i asked.

he said, i dont know, but theres a big note pinned to my jacket that says, dont talk about the saudis. i keep forgetting.

so i said, just say that iraq is bad and america is good and even though saddam said on 60 minutes that he wanted to talk live on tv that he's really a liar and his nose is gonna grow and all he's trying to do is stall so that we accidently shoot ourselves as we're accumulating troops in the persian gulf. and he's stalling so he can make new bombs to blow us all to hell.

there was a pause and he asked me for another word for hell.

and i said hell is exactly the place that the enemies of america want us to be blown to. the polls say that if you ran for re-election right now you'd lose, which makes sense cuz you lost the first time, and i wouldnt vote for a man who allowed himself to get talked out of saying hell when he meant hell.

the president seemed sad. he said, you wouldnt vote for me?

i said, a real president would say "blow us all to shit." hell is a more reasonable alternative, and anyway if you say hell people will start believing the seriousness of this fucked up shit.

A three-judge panel of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Thursday that the Child Online Protection Act restricted free speech by barring Web page operators from posting information inappropriate for minors unless they limited the site to adults. The ruling upheld an injunction blocking the government from enforcing the law.

"I'm going to get you. I'm going to kill you."

A Houston Planned Parenthood clinic sustained its first violent attack in nearly five years today, only days after the U.S. Supreme Court reversed a ruling that had shut down aggressive anti-abortion demonstrations at clinics.

Frank Lafayette Bird Jr., 61, of the 2300 block of Callie Street, was arrested after driving a delivery van into the front entrance of the clinic on Fannin.

Bird, a well-known Houston abortion protester who served a one-year federal prison term for attacking a doctor outside another Houston clinic in December 1994, told a deputy constable the crash was deliberate, to "stop the killing."

And here's an excerpt from this moron's court case:

On December 13, 1994, appellant Frank Bird (Bird), while protesting outside the America's Women Clinic in Houston, Texas, threw a bottle at a car driven by Dr. Theodore Herring (Herring), an abortion provider, as he attempted to enter the clinic premises. As Bird threw the bottle, he yelled, "Herring, I'm going to get you. I'm going to kill you." Although Dr. Herring was not physically injured, the bottle shattered the windshield of his car. Employees of the clinic subsequently called the police, who arrived at the scene and arrested Bird.

Toya - babygirl's got all the right weaponry

Yesterday I saw a guy overdose on heroin...that was not nice at all. He had been dragged out of the bar next to my work and was outside completely fucked up and unconscious, the paramedics were trying to resuscitate him by giving him oxygen, pumping on his chest, and yelling at him to open his eyes. A crowd of people milled around and just watched, as soon as he was put into the ambulance and the cops dispersed, everyone just walked away and carried on with their day. Human beings are so strange, it's just odd how we all rubber-neck as soon as we see a "broken" person, it interests people to see others in that state, they just stand around and watch as somebody nearly dies, then wonder off to do their groceries or whatever. This post is getting so long and random now...

Dave Says (On the Subject of War & Government)

They say that they love the American people but hate our government. They don't understand the US. Read the Constitution. Check out the first three words. It's our government. You can't like us and not like our government, and vice versa.

The problem with this is that it is not our government. The United States is in a state of Constitutional breach and until we have a legally elected President we will continue to be so.

This is why the above comments are so wrong. It does not say in the Constitution that the Supreme Court decides issues related to an election. The Constitution has a well described method for dealing with election snafus. These methods were ignored by the court and all involved. The end result is that we do no have a government. This is why it is so important to overturn this pseudo-potus from his pretend throne. I heard on NPR this morning interviews with Iraqi children who want us to liberate the country. I am all for liberating Iraq but by doing so we strengthen the hand of George Bush. The man should be tried for treason not empowered to wage war.

In normal times what Dave says would make sense in normal times. But we are not in normal times. We are in between normal times. The next properly elected President will have to manage the problems at home caused by this breach.

Jane Galt Does PETA

I'm not one complain about meat eaters. In fact I am one. Sure I have been a vegetarian, on more than one ocassion, and sure it is nice to do a change up in your menu sometimes, I mean you can only eat Frito-pie so many days in a row before some corn on the cob starts calling your name. But to be honest I have never been a fan of PETA because, well what they do seems so completely uninteresting to me. It's not that I don't agree with PETA's goals. I mean who can argue with less cruelty as an objective. But when push comes to shove the logical conclusion of PETA's position is that we all become vegetarian, you'll remember at this point that I am not a vegetarian currently, and that is simply not something I am willing to abide by. I love my roast beast! Yumm!

So I am inclined to give PETA the benefit of the doubt. Well I should say I was. You see I have a story which resulted in turning me against PETA. More on that in a moment.

Now contrary to some of Jane's readers I don't give a rats ass about being vindictive towards PETA. I'm not going to join in any International Eat An Animal for PETA campaign. There are about 3,789,908 things which come first in line for me when it comes to campaigns I'll spend time and or money and or energy on and throwing a fit about PETA is certainly not one of them. In my world view some fools should just be ignored. Since PETA is not about to take over the world, and incidently seems to genuinely have good intentions, they fall into the category of ignore at every opportunity. If I truly wanted to spread my resources and energy towards a group which tackles problems of animal cruelty I'd have to pick ASPCA.

So to the story then it happens that once I was in NYC at a dear friends. We were celebrating a birthday for his dad. His dad, it so happens, was a scientist at Dow. He related to me the following. Somewhere in Dow, at the behest of some experiment, there were several hundred monkeys which were being slowly poisoned in the search for a cure to some terrible disease.

It was a bad situation for the monkeys and the people involved. The saving grace of this was that the experiments would result in saving lives, both in monkeys and humans. Not many months before the experiment was to end PETA rescued the monkeys.

Now apparently, and this is where the story gets interesting to me, this experiment was going to be done whether these particular monkeys were rescued or not. When the enormous loss of this experiment took place plans were immediately made to do the several year experiment again in Japan. So PETA rescued some monkeys and more died.

I find this to be very troublesome. Surely the logical conclusion of an organizations actions should be thought out at least as far as what happens to the next set of monkeys?

Tacitus

To plunder, to slaughter, to steal, these things they misname empire; and where they make a wilderness, they call it peace.

Very interesting take on the current state of US strategy in Iraq. I disagree completely but compelling nonetheless.

Philippines

decides the rhythm method is the way to curb population growth.

C says...The blurb here is inaccurate because it states that the Philippines will use the rhythm method. In fact the article claims that they plan to teach Natural Family Planning (NFP). My understanding is that NFP is more effective than the rhythm method because it uses aspects of the rhythm method in conjunction with sympto-thermal methods.

A Call for Softer, Greener Language

In interviews, Republican politicians and their aides said they agreed with the strategist, Frank Luntz, that it was important to pay attention to what his memorandum, written before the November elections, called "the environmental communications battle."

In his memorandum, Mr. Luntz urges that the term "climate change" be used instead of "global warming," because "while global warming has catastrophic communications attached to it, climate change sounds a more controllable and less emotional challenge."

Also, he wrote, "conservationist" conveys a "moderate, reasoned, common sense position" while "environmentalist" has the "connotation of extremism."

President Bush's speeches on the environment show that the terms "global warming" and "environmentalist" had largely disappeared by late last summer. The terms appeared in a number of President Bush's speeches in 2001, but now the White House fairly consistently uses "climate change" and "conservationist."

Mark My Words

with Turkey denying United States troops, the United Nations surely not supporting a war in time for George Bush's war, Saddam destroying his weapons, popular opinion in the United States against a war it is looking more and more like the administration is going to implode.

I have been under the impression for several months that Bush was impaling himself on Iraq. It seems others are starting to say the same.

Recent Stats - February 2003

So even though I have supposedly been removed from being permitted to use my traffic stats app because of the sheer volume of visitors to this site it is still working. This past months stats show that approximately 215,148 individual users came by to check out what I do. I want to thank every one for stopping by. At this rate I'll have 2.6 million visitors this year. Pretty amazing considering I am just one guy with a computer and a bit of skills.

Mandela On The AIDS Epidemic

"They don't want you to talk about it. I told them we have got this epidemic which is going to wipe out our nation if we don't take precautions," he said.

He once told an audience that they must tell their children to delay having sex as much as possible and when they do, they must use condoms.

"I could see I was offending my audience. They were looking at each other horrified."

Apparently Mandela was then advised not to talk about AIDS because it might endanger his election campaign.

Mandela also said that in his term he had little time to concentrate on the Aids issue because he had to prevent a civil war, which could have led to nationwide chaos.

But in the interview the former president accepts the criticism about his handling of the AIDS pandemic. "Its no use crying over split milk," he said.
